Many dojos refer to eight familiar values: politeness, courage, sincerity, honour, modesty, respect, self-control and friendship. This list, however, was not written directly by Jigoro Kano.
According to the International Judo Federation’s historical account, the moral code was formally organised in France in 1985 through the work of Bernard Midan and the cultural commission of the French Judo Federation, with input from Shōzō Awazu, who taught judo in France for many years.
Kano’s educational foundation remained maximum efficiency and mutual welfare and benefit. The later eight-value code translated that spirit into principles that could be discussed more easily in dojos, schools and daily life. The two are not rivals; they explain judo’s educational purpose from different angles.
