Japan filled the top two places at -90 kg and Spain took a first senior world title at -70 kg on day five of the 2026 Baku World Championships, held on 8 October.

Men's -90 kg: Murao keeps the red back patch

Sanshiro Murao beat compatriot Goki Tajima in the final, opening the score with a waza-ari and then finishing with a ko-soto-gari for ippon after 3 minutes and 7 seconds. The win keeps the world title and the red back patch with Murao for a second year.

Tajima took silver, giving Japan first and second place in the category.

Women's -70 kg: Tsunoda Roustant completes the set

Ai Tsunoda Roustant of Spain won her first senior world title by beating Austria's Michaela Polleres. The contest lasted 7 minutes and 21 seconds in total, and the decisive moment came 3 minutes and 21 seconds into golden score, when the last penalty went against Polleres.

Tsunoda Roustant had already been world champion as a cadet and twice as a junior, and now holds the senior title as well.

Polleres' silver is Austria's first world championship final since Ludwig Paischer won silver in Cairo in 2005.

Day six: Sulamanidze and Lytvynenko take the -100 kg and -78 kg titles

Georgia's Ilia Sulamanidze won the men's -100 kg title, beating Japan's Arai Dota in the final. Gennaro Pirelli of Italy and Niiaz Bilalov took the bronze medals.

The women's -78 kg title went to Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko of the United Arab Emirates, who beat France's Kaila Issoufi. Germany's Anna Monta Olek and Japan's Ikeda Kurena took bronze.

Day seven: Tasoev and Lee win the heavyweights

Inal Tasoev won the men's +100 kg title, beating Azerbaijan's Ushangi Kokauri in the final, with bronze for Lukas Krpalek of the Czech Republic and Kanan Nasibov. Japan's Nakano Kanta did not reach the medal contests.

Korea's Lee Hyeonji took the women's +78 kg title ahead of France's Romane Dicko, with bronze for Mariia Ivanova and Israel's Raz Hershko. Japan's Arai Mao finished seventh.

Japan finish top of the medal table

Japan ended the individual championships top of the medal table with seven golds, two silvers and three bronzes, ahead of Georgia on 2-1-1, Azerbaijan on 1-2-4 and Spain on 1-2-1.
