The All Japan Judo Federation will hold a Seven-Tenths Judo Club practice session at Fukui Prefectural Budokan on 2 August. The initiative has been promoted since 2023 as a way to keep judo enjoyable while making training safer for participants of different ages and levels.

“Seven-tenths” does not simply mean using seventy per cent of one’s strength. The idea is to show restraint: not forcing an exhausted partner to continue, choosing throws from which a partner can take ukemi safely, avoiding makikomi, and remaining aware of the edge of the mat and the people nearby.

The Fukui programme includes warm-up exercises, ukemi, uchikomi, randori and technical instruction. Yusuke Kanamaru and Ai Tachimoto are listed as instructors. The message behind the session is straightforward: good randori protects both training partners, so that they can keep practising judo for years to come.
