The 19-year-old Jonathan Yang finished seventh in the men's -60 kg at the Baku World Championships and became the first American man to reach a world championships quarter-final since 1999.
USA Judo notes that Yang was the youngest athlete on Team USA. He opened with an ippon in the first seconds of golden score against Turkey's Salih Yildiz in the round of 32, then threw world number one Balabay Aghayev of Azerbaijan for ippon in front of the home crowd to reach the quarter-finals.
According to USA Judo, the last American man to reach a world championships quarter-final was Jimmy Pedro in 1999, when he won gold.
Quarter-final and repechage
Yang lost the quarter-final to the Olympic silver medallist Yang Yung Wei of Chinese Taipei and then lost to Ayub Bliev in the repechage, finishing seventh.
