The European Judo Union will stage its first standalone European Ne-Waza Judo Championships in Riga, Latvia, on 29 and 30 August. The event will take place at the BT1 International Expo Centre.
The championships will bring together cadet, junior and senior judoka in a competition dedicated to groundwork. Ne-waza focuses on the part of judo fought on the mat, including control, pins, armlocks and strangles within the rules.
Groundwork has always been part of judo, but a dedicated continental championship gives it a clearer place in the competition calendar. For athletes and coaches, it also creates a focused setting to study transitions, control and finishing techniques.
