Hong Kong sent two men to the Qingdao Grand Prix 2026: WONG Ka Ki in the men's -66kg category and LEE Kwok Wing in -81kg. Both faced high-level World Tour opposition, with several details worth recording from their campaigns.
Wong Ka Ki defeats the world No.12
In -66kg, Wong opened against Finland's Luukas Saha. The official IJF entry list ranked Saha 12th in the category and Wong 144th before the event. Wong defeated the higher-ranked opponent and advanced to face France's Kelvin Ray.
Ray went on to win a bronze medal in Qingdao, meaning Wong's second contest came against one of the event's eventual medallists.
Lee Kwok Wing completes his -81kg campaign
In -81kg, Lee faced Egor Sukhoparov of the Russian team in his opening contest and did not advance. Sukhoparov later reached the repechage and bronze-medal phase, finishing fifth. IJF data dated 28 June 2026 lists Lee 89th in the men's -81kg world ranking with 439 points.
For Hong Kong judo, Wong's opening win over the world No.12 is the result that stands out. It did not immediately turn into a medal, but defeating a highly ranked opponent at World Tour level is a meaningful step in building international experience.
